about the film: Bling: A Planet Rock
BLING is an 87-minute documentary that takes a hard-hitting look at how the flashy world of commercial hip-hop played a significant role in the 10-year civil war in Sierra Leone, West Africa. The term "bling" refers to the shine emanating from polished diamonds that represent the status symbol for hip-hop luminaries and fans alike. BLING follows three hip-hop celebrities: Raekwon (Wu Tang Klan), Paul Wall and Reggaeton king, Tego Calderon. They visit the capital of Freetown where they survey the devastated country, meet the hip-hop community, as well as encounter refugees and former child soldiers first hand. The stars are visibly affected by the accounts of the atrocities suffered at the hands of the rebels that included rape, torture and amputation. The film effectively captures the hip-hop community's reaction to the human rights violations and the complexities that still exist, while presenting a much needed global perspective for our youth through the dominant voice of hip-hop. A shorter broadcast-version edited for content and time-of "Bling" aired on VH1 in February 2007 under the title "Bling'd: Blood, Diamonds and Hip-Hop".

Against the backdrop of this historic 2008 presidential election, an exuberant cast paints a musical and comedic portrait of the American political scene – a satire so sharp that within a few months of the show, Bush and Cheney will have no choice but to leave office. Life After Bush is a musical we can believe in.

Blood & Oil
Join us for a screening of Blood and Oil, a new documentary based on the critically-acclaimed work of Nation magazine defense correspondent Michael T. Klare. The film unearths declassified documents and highlights forgotten passages in prominent presidential doctrines to show how concerns about oil have been at the core of American foreign policy for more than 60 years – rendering our contemporary energy and military policies virtually indistinguishable. In the end, Blood and Oil calls for a radical re-thinking of US energy policy, warning that unless we change direction, we stand to be drawn into one oil war after another as the global hunt for diminishing world petroleum supplies accelerates.

Message from the NYU College Democrats
We are going to organize a massive, campus-wide voter registration and absentee ballot drive for next Wednesday night (September 24th) from 7-10PM.
Early next week, a campus-wide e-mail will be sent out by ResEd announcing our drive. Fliers will be posted in every dorm. During the evening next Wednesday, RA's will go door to door asking students if they are registered to vote and if they need any assistance in obtaining an absentee ballot.
While this is happening, NYU College Democrats and NYU Students for Obama volunteers will staff tables in the lobby of nineteen NYU residence halls, simultaneously. We will be registering students to vote in their home states, and, at each table, we will have a printer and a laptop computer, with the ability to print absentee ballot request forms for students, on demand.
If you live in one of the following dorms, we need your help!
Coral
Carlyle
Lafayette
26th St.
Water St.
(Goddard is covered! Cynthia & Sindhu)
In order to assist us in registering students to vote, you must go through a volunteer training (believe us, this stuff is complicated, and we want you to be comfortable making sense of different rules in different states). If you were at the meeting on Thursday and signed up to help out, but couldn't make it to our training on Sunday afternoon, we will have an alternate training session this Thursday night, at 8PM in room 909 of Kimmel.
For those of you who are hearing about this for the first time and want to be a part of this, come to our training session Thursday night at 8PM in room 909 of Kimmel, and learn how to register your fellow students to vote...anytime, anywhere.
I'll see you there,
Neal Shechter
President, NYU College Democrats
